Hard freezes are rare in Dallas-Fort Worth, which is exactly why so many homes are not ready for one. A pipe that freezes can split, and the damage often shows up only after the ice thaws and water starts pouring out.
Before the freeze
Find your main water shutoff valve and make sure it turns. Wrap exposed pipes in garages, attics, and exterior walls with foam pipe insulation. Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets. On very cold nights, open the cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so warm air can reach the pipes.
During the freeze
Let faucets drip slowly, especially ones fed by pipes in exterior walls. Keep your thermostat at the same setting day and night, and do not turn it way down if you leave town.
If a pipe freezes
If water stops flowing, shut off the main valve and open the affected faucet. Warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer or warm towels and never use an open flame. If you see a crack, a bulge, or water where it should not be, leave the main off and call a plumber.
